The short answer: Slow or laboured cranking when you start the car, headlights that visibly dim when the engine is idling, needing a jump-start more than once within a week or two, and a battery that's over three to four years old are the clearest warning signs that it's on its way out.
A healthy battery cranks the engine briskly and consistently every time, regardless of whether the car's been sitting for a day or a week. A battery in decline starts to hesitate — a slightly slower crank than usual, especially noticeable on cold mornings when battery chemistry is naturally less efficient. This is often the very first sign, and it's easy to dismiss as "just a cold morning" the first few times it happens.
Age matters more than most drivers expect. Most car batteries have a realistic working life of around three to five years, shorter in a stop-start, short-trip driving pattern (which never gives the alternator a long enough run to fully recharge it) and shorter again in extreme heat, which accelerates the internal chemical breakdown. If you don't know how old your battery is, that alone is worth checking — batteries rarely fail conveniently.
A test beats a guess: A visual check can't tell you a battery's actual condition — a load test measures how it performs under real demand and gives a genuine pass/fail result, rather than relying on how it "seems" from the driver's seat.
If you've jump-started your car more than once recently, don't keep doing it and hoping — get the battery load-tested and the alternator's charging output checked at the same time, since a weak alternator can mimic a dying battery and vice versa.
