The short answer: The check engine light means your car's onboard computer has detected a fault in the engine, emissions, or fuel system. The single most useful thing you can check yourself is whether the light is steady or flashing. A steady light means a fault has been logged, and while you shouldn't ignore it, it's usually safe to keep driving to your mechanic within the next few days. A flashing light is different: it typically means the engine is misfiring right now, and continuing to drive can send unburnt fuel into the catalytic converter, overheating and destroying it โ€” turning a cheap fix into an expensive one.

Common causes range from the trivial (a fuel cap not tightened properly, which lets the emissions system see a "leak" that isn't real) to the moderate (a faulty oxygen sensor or ignition coil) to the serious (a genuine misfire or catalytic converter fault). Guessing from the symptom alone is unreliable โ€” the same light can mean completely different things on different cars.
