Stop Now — Don't Continue Driving

A brake pedal that sinks to the floor. A flashing check engine light (an active misfire that can destroy your catalytic converter within minutes). A temperature gauge in the red or visible steam from the engine bay. A strong fuel smell near the engine bay. Any of these mean pull over as soon as safely possible and arrange a tow — continuing risks turning a repair into a much larger one, or a genuine safety incident.

Drive Carefully to a Workshop, Don't Delay

A steady (not flashing) check engine light. A grinding brake noise. A car pulling noticeably to one side. A battery warning light. These need attention soon — within a day or two — but generally don't require an immediate roadside stop if you drive gently and directly to a workshop.

Book It In, No Rush

A brake squeal (the wear indicator doing its job). A clunk over bumps. Slightly reduced fuel economy. A dashboard symbol you don't recognise but that isn't red. These are worth addressing at your next convenient opportunity, not an emergency.
