Almost always a brake pad wear indicator doing exactly what it's designed to do — a small metal tab that contacts the rotor once the pad material gets low. Worth booking in soon, not an emergency. See our FAQ: Why Are My Brakes Squealing When I Brake?
Grinding When Braking
A deeper, harsher sound than squealing — usually means the pad material is completely gone and metal is contacting metal. This is urgent; every stop is now damaging the rotor as well as offering reduced stopping power.
Clunking Over Bumps
Typically a worn suspension component — a sway bar link, control arm bush, or strut mount — that's developed play at exactly the point in its travel a bump triggers. Squealing From Under the Bonnet at Startup
Often a worn or slipping drive belt (which powers the alternator and other accessories), especially noticeable on cold mornings before it "warms into" its pulleys. Worth checking soon — a belt that eventually fails can knock out your alternator and power steering at once.
A Rhythmic Clicking When Turning
Classic sign of a worn CV joint (constant velocity joint), part of the front axle on most cars. Gets louder the sharper you turn. Not usually an immediate emergency, but a joint that fails completely can leave you unable to drive.
Hissing After Turning the Engine Off
Usually just normal — pressure equalising in the cooling system as things cool down. Only a concern if paired with a sweet smell (coolant leak) or visible steam.
The general rule: A noise that's new, that's getting louder over days or weeks, or that changes with speed/braking/turning is worth having checked. A one-off noise that doesn't repeat is usually not worth chasing.
