The Mechanism

An under-inflated tyre has more of its surface in contact with the road, creating more rolling resistance — the engine has to work harder to maintain the same speed, using more fuel to cover the same distance.

Why It's Easy to Miss

Tyres lose pressure gradually and naturally over time — even without a puncture, normal air permeation through the rubber and temperature changes cause a slow, steady decline that's rarely dramatic enough to notice by feel alone.

Temperature Makes It Worse

Tyre pressure drops in cold weather as the air inside contracts — a tyre correctly inflated in summer can be noticeably under-inflated by the time winter arrives, without anyone having done anything wrong.

Beyond Fuel Economy

Under-inflated tyres also wear unevenly (typically along the outer edges) and increase braking distance — the fuel cost is real, but it's not even the most safety-relevant reason to check pressure regularly.

How often to check: Monthly, plus before any long trip and at each change of season — takes under two minutes with a simple gauge, and the correct pressure for your specific car is usually printed on a sticker inside the driver's door frame, not necessarily the number printed on the tyre sidewall itself.
