Ask to See the Evidence

A worn pad, a rotor measurement, a diagnostic code — a legitimate recommendation can usually be shown to you, not just described. Reluctance to show evidence is worth treating as a signal.

Get the Quote Itemised

Parts and labour broken down separately, not one lump figure. This alone makes it far easier to compare against a second quote fairly, and to identify exactly what you'd be declining if you said no to part of it.

Compare Scope, Not Just Price

Two quotes that look wildly different in price are often quoting two different jobs — one including rotor replacement, one not, for instance. Before assuming the cheaper quote is better, confirm both are covering the same actual work.

Get a Second Opinion on Anything Major

For a significant repair — suspension work, transmission issues, anything in the four-figure range — a second opinion costs little relative to the job and gives you real leverage if the first quote was inflated.

Watch for Urgency Without Evidence

Genuine urgency ("your brake pedal is going to the floor") should come with a clear, demonstrable reason. Vague urgency ("this really needs doing today") without evidence is worth questioning.
