1. Find Safe Ground

Move to a flat, firm surface well clear of traffic if you can — a side street rather than a live traffic lane. Turn on hazard lights and apply the handbrake.

2. Loosen the Wheel Nuts Before Jacking

Loosen (don't fully remove) each wheel nut while the tyre is still on the ground — much harder to do once the wheel is raised and free-spinning.

3. Position and Raise the Jack

Use the correct jacking point specified for your vehicle (check your owner's manual) — an incorrect point can damage the car or make the jack unstable. Raise until the flat tyre is clear of the ground.

4. Remove and Replace

Fully remove the loosened nuts, take off the flat tyre, and fit the spare. Hand-tighten the nuts in a star pattern (opposite corners, not around in a circle) for even seating.

5. Lower and Final Tighten

Lower the car back to the ground, then fully tighten the nuts in the same star pattern — full tightening requires the wheel's resistance against the ground, which is why this step comes after lowering.

After the swap: A space-saver spare should be driven gently and at reduced speed — it's a temporary solution, not a full replacement. Get the punctured tyre properly assessed as soon as possible, since some punctures can be repaired and others need full replacement.

For a real-world example of exactly this process, see our case study: Flat Tyre on Ballarat Road.
